The opening statement needs two revisions. Dune was first written by Frank Herbert. Secondly, the 1984 film was directed by David Lynch.
The game takes place in the distant future, in a feudal interstellar society in which the noble houses that control individual planets are subordinate to the Padishah Emperor. Dune tells the story of young Paul Atreides, whose noble family takes control of the desert planet Arrakis.
Since this planet is the only source of "spicy" melange, the most important and valuable substance in the universe, control of Arrakis is a desirable and dangerous task. The story explores the multi-layered interplay of politics, religion, ecology, technology and human emotion as the forces of the empire pit against each other in a struggle for control of Arrakis and its "condiments".
